Hydrogen Storage in Caverns (HSiC)
As the UK moves towards a net-zero energy system, hydrogen storage is expected to play a vital role in balancing supply and demand across days, weeks and even seasons. One of the most promising options for large-scale hydrogen storage is using underground salt caverns, which offer a safe, low-cost and proven method for storing gas at high volumes.
The Hydrogen Storage in Caverns (HSiC) initiative, led by the Energy Research Accelerator (ERA) and the University of Nottingham Energy Institute at the University of Nottingham, brings together experts from academia, industry and government to explore the latest developments in this emerging field. The discussions cover technical, commercial and regulatory aspects — from site characterisation and engineering design to business models and policy pathways.
