Tyseley Energy Park – energy innovation zone

Birmingham Energy Innovation Centre

Supporting energy innovation – sustainable facilities and fuels for transport

Hydrogen fuelling

Tyseley Energy Park (TEP), is an Energy Innovation Zone being developed in the City of Birmingham to help drive the transformation of the city to meet its plan for decarbonisation and the development of a clean air zone and was supported by ERA with its first phase funding.

The site integrates waste and recycling with energy, fuels and transportation solutions for the City of Birmingham. ERA initially supported the Thermo-Catalytic Reformer (TCR) which turns biomass into high quality syngas, biooil, biochar and water.

ERA and the University of Birmingham’s support for the Tyseley Energy Park was the catalyst for massive future investment into the site.

Today the site hosts the UK’s largest green hydrogen refuelling station, which supports the City of Birmingham’s hydrogen bus fleet, as well as hydrogen fuelled refuse trucks. Green hydrogen is produced on site using Motive’s Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) electrolyser.

Tyseley Energy Park is also the home of the university’s Birmingham Energy Innovation Centre which provides a mixture of research and incubation facilities for innovative businesses.

Tyseley is also going to be the base for Ammogen, a world leading ammonia to hydrogen project and the Climate Innovation Platform, which supports start-ups and SMEs developing sustainable businesses.

Creating Birmingham’s Green Energy and Innovation Quarter

Tyseley Energy Park is also on a mission is to transform clean energy innovation in Birmingham and the West Midlands. The TEP is working with University of Birmingham and Birmingham City Council to deliver a clear vision for the Tyseley Environmental Enterprise District that will transform East Birmingham into a Green Energy and Innovation Quarter.

The vision includes:

  • Creating an exemplary sustainable working and living ecosystem which is recognised for its approach to net zero and sustainability.

  • Linking to the city’s East Birmingham Inclusive Growth Strategy to promote inclusive growth in TEED that will benefit both local communities and the wider Birmingham area.

  • Collaborating with residents and businesses in the community to ensure the area is developed to the benefit of everyone.

  • Building on current momentum to attract more businesses to the area to join the green energy revolution.
