DESCRIPTION:Join us at Keele University on 17 September 2026 for an exciting ERA-sponsored collaborative skills event focused on Smart Energy Networks and low carbon generation technologies. Bringing together doctoral and postdoctoral researchers\, academics and industry partners from across the ERA partnership\, this full-day event will provide excellent opportunities to learn about Keele University’s unique Local Energy Grid\, Smart Energy Network Demonstrator\, and green hydrogen production. Doctoral researcher lightning talks will offer the opportunity to present research from across the ERA partnership and the day will culminate in teams engaging in a real-world challenge data hackathon \nAttendees can expect a dynamic programme running from approximately 10.00am to 4.00pm\, including: \n\nResearch showcase presentations\, including lightning talks from PhD researchers across ERA partnerships and CDTs\nInfrastructure tours of Keele’s local grid system and green hydrogen generation hub\nA hackathon-style real-world data challenge\, with the data from Keele’s SEND system.\nDedicated networking opportunities with academic and industry partners over lunch and breaks\n\nWith places provisionally limited to 50 attendees\, this event offers an excellent opportunity to exchange ideas\, raise your profile\, and spark future collaborations in the transition to a net zero future.

SUMMARY:Using Generative AI Responsibly: Environmental Impacts\, Net Zero and Research Practice
DESCRIPTION:Join Energy Research Accelerator (ERA) and C-DICE for this one-hour workshop exploring the environmental impact of Generative AI use in research and how to use it responsibly. \nGenerative AI is becoming part of everyday research practice\, from literature reviewing and writing support to data analysis\, coding\, grant applications and project management. This one-hour session will give researchers a clear\, practical introduction to the environmental implications of using generative AI\, with a particular focus on energy use\, carbon emissions\, water consumption\, data centres\, model training and everyday AI use. We will explore what is currently known\, where the evidence is still developing\, and why this matters for researchers working in energy\, sustainability and net zero. \nThe session will also focus on practical mitigation. Participants will consider how to use AI more responsibly\, including when AI is genuinely useful\, when simpler digital tools may be more appropriate\, how to reduce unnecessary prompting and file uploads\, and how to build environmental awareness into research workflows. Step into the shoes of key players in a national-scale decarbonisation effort\, with this new business game from Heuristic. Decarb-a-nation© is an innovative\, challenging\, yet fun workshop day where participants interact with the complex journey to net zero in an immersive\, accessible way. Through the power of heuristic gameplay and discussions facilitated by energy industry experts with over 80 years of combined experience\, participants run realistic decarbonisation scenarios in a safe and relaxed environment\, using real data that has direct parallels in the real world. \nHow it works: You will work as part of a team taking on the perspectives of Households\, Industry\, Power Utilities\, Local Authorities\, or National Government. SUMMARY:Energy Resilience for Agricultural Communities 2026: Accelerating the UK Agricultural Energy Transition through Research\, Collaboration and Action
DESCRIPTION:The UK agricultural sector faces growing pressure to transition to Net Zero while maintaining productivity\, resilience and economic viability. But what is stopping progress\, and what could help accelerate change? \nThis interactive workshop brings together farmers\, agricultural and rural organisations\, agro-processors\, energy and technology specialists\, policymakers\, investors and researchers to explore practical solutions to the UK agricultural energy transition. \nParticipants will share challenges\, hear cross-sector perspectives and explore research evidence\, before using the Integrated Agricultural Energy Transition Framework (IAETF) to co-design priorities for action.
